In the sea of adoring faces, one watched Zlo with curiosity. Joe stood still and straight, threading his sobriety chip through his fingers, listening to the man at the podium. Kibbles the terrier sat quietly on Joe’s feet. Freshly bathed and clipped, with a new leash and collar, he caught the attention of a few nurses who were skirting the outside of the group on their way to work. A number of the pretty women smiled at the handsome young red-haired man who probably looked vaguely familiar to them. Joe smiled back as they bent to pet the friendly little terrier. Gloria bustled her way through the crowd to stand beside him and the man at Joe’s side.

She hugged Joe fiercely and her eyes teared up as she raised her hand to brush away the thick fall of red hair over his forehead. She looked deep into his clear, green eyes. “Joe. I don’t have the words. You look wonderful.”

“Thanks, Gloria. Could not have done it without my kick-ass sponsor. Thank you for lending him to me.”

The man beside them both reached out an arm to wrap around his wife’s shoulders. The man continued to glare at Zlo from behind his dark sunglasses.

“What does he have against people like us, Jack?” Joe asked.

Jack sighed. He put a large, comforting hand on Joe’s shoulder. “Fear, Joe. He is terrified. He is scared that he will lose what he has and scared that he won’t get what he thinks he needs. That sort of fear looks like hatred. He would rather hate than move outside his comfort zone to try some empathy. Men like Zlo have zero interest in people like us. It would be easier on his mind if we all got shipped to some deserted island to fend for ourselves. To keep his conscience clear he would supply the basic necessities of survival by helicopter drop.”

Gloria stared at Zlo with contempt. For all his handsomeness, his beautiful speeches, his artful and practiced way of pretending to connect with people, she had told Joe she was quite happy to stay outside the six-foot-pole range of him.
